Document Imaging is back in a big way.

In the early 1990's "document imaging" was a trendy catch phrase and a heavy focus for many computer resellers. Sadly the next big thing was not to fly very far due to the costly hardware investment in storage and quality scanning solution. The software was also very expensive, proprietary, poorly supported and came from 'underfunded' startup companies. The combination of these factors made this technology a titanic investment afforded by only the larger firms who had capital, resources and extreme patience to invest in a long term solution. It is no wonder the sales dropped off. Fortunately times have changed and so has the landscape for this technology. The cost of storage has never been lower, compared to 1995, storage is roughly 5% of the cost it was back then. A high speed scanner that was $50,000 is now $2000 and it is significantly faster than its predecessors. And most importantly the software has matured to a point that it is available to mainstream distribution as a canned application that is affordable, full featured and dramatically less costly than the half-custom-coded databases of the past.
